Jenna Dewan Tatum is headed back to the small screen to star in a new musical drama series for Fox, Mixtape.
Dewan Tatum first won our hearts with her work on the Step Up, and she’s spent time helping the next generation of dancers grow as a host and mentor on World of Dance. And while she’s had a lot of great roles outside of the dancing world like her run on Supergirl or the Lifetime show Witches of East End, she’s returning to her dancing roots in a new Fox pilot.

The show, Mixtape, is a romantic musical drama set in Los Angeles. Mixtape comes from the showrunner of NBC’s Smash, Josh Safran. The show will tell the story of individuals living in Los Angeles through the music that defines who they are. Mixtape will tell stories of love, heartbreak, and how love can help a person heal from tragedy.
For her part, Dewan Tatum will play a young professional named Joanna who likes to be in control. She’s highly rational, guarded in everything she does, and tends to always be prepared for the worst. Joanna is a leading role in the show, and Dewan Tatum will be playing opposite Callie Hernandez and Madeline Stowe.
The pilot will be written by Safran, and is set to be directed by Jesse Peretz. While Safran’s Smash was cancelled after two seasons, it was incredibly well-loved by musical fans, and many thought the show was cancelled before its time. Because of that, we can’t wait to see more of Safran’s musical creativity in the Mixtape pilot, and with a talented cast filled with actors like Jenna Dewan Tatum, this is definitely going to be the show to watch.
We’ll have to wait for more information from Fox on the pilot and the episode’s plot. However, with Rise heading to the small screen as well, we’re really excited about more musical television shows filling up prime time.
