The third Divergent film Allegiant, Part 1 will be written by the same person who penned the book-to-film adaptation of The Maze Runner.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Noah Oppenheim will write the first half of the Allegiant finale for Lionsgate. The news is particularly interesting to the YA community because he also wrote the script for Fox’s The Maze Runner, which opens in theaters this September.

Oppenheim has no other writing credits outside of Maze Runner but has produced a handful of shows, including NBC’s Today and Losing it with Jillian.

Since we don’t know how The Maze Runner is, it’s too early to tell if this is good or bad news for the series. If the book-to-film adaptation of James Dashner’s novel is good, and if Summit likes the work Oppenheim does with Part 1, presumably he’ll be back for Part 2.

Divergent was written by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. Insurgent is by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

Filming on the Divergent sequel Insurgent is currently taking place in Atlanta under the direction of Robert Schwentke. The film will open on March 20, 2015.

Allegiant, Part 1 is set for March 18, 2016 while Allegiant, Part 2 will be released March 24, 2017. Neither Allegiant film has a director at this time.
